Yes, it is cold outside but we are feeling the warmth at Domestic Abuse Services Oxford! So many generous donations from so many in the community. We have been the recipient of cash donations – large and small – all of which are very appreciated and needed. We need to fund raise $200,000 each and every year just to maintain our current essential programs and services. And every year the communities of Oxford help us help the hundreds of women, children and adolescents who come to us seeking shelter and support in making the transition to safer, happier lives free from violence and abuse.
Thank you to the many businesses, organizations, churches, women’s groups, families and individuals who donated piles of Christmas gifts and food for those living in our shelter and others in community-based programming who are part of the DASO “family”. We have enough gifts and toys to take us through an entire year of birthdays and special events! Words seem not enough to express our deepest thanks and gratitude. Please know that you are making a difference in the lives of many.
On another note, I was in a local store this week and humming along to the piped in Christmas music. “Baby It’s Cold Outside” came on and while half-listening and humming along, it occurred to me that the lyrics were rather unsettling. Weird with undertones of creepy and stereotypes of women and men and sexual consent mixed in. Which sent me to the internet (or “the internets” as my Dad used to say) to research if others felt the same. And yes, others did! Always a happy moment. Anyway, I found this video https://youtu.be/amK4U4pCTB8 with the song performed by a wonderful duo, Lydia Liza and Josiah Lemanski using consent language lyrics. Love it! Enjoy.
Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful New Year.
